Have a lesson before Your Driving Test
Taking a driving lesson on the day of your test will help you pass the first time.
We’d recommend fitting in an hour-long lesson before taking the driving test, that way you can go over any manoeuvres or ask for clarification on last-minute questions at hand.
You may feel nervous but having had two hours with an instructor to get used to being behind the wheel should soothe those nerves and put you in good stead for passing.
Check you have all the required evidence for the Driving Test
Your UK driving licence
Your theory test pass certificate, if you have it
A face covering, unless you have a good reason not to wear one
Wearing a face covering
You must bring and wear a face covering for your test unless you have a good reason not to. Good reasons are things like:
having a physical or mental illness or impairment, or a disability
wearing it would cause you severe distress
You need to say if you have a good reason not to wear a face-covering when you book your test.
Your test will be canceled if you come for your test without a face covering and you did not say that you could not wear one when you booked it.
You can take it off during your test if you need to avoid harm or injury.
Your test will be canceled and you will not get your money back if you do not take the right things with you
You can take your instructor along for confidence-boosting when you have your Driving Test
Just remember though there will be extra weight in the car, which will affect braking and stopping distances.
They’ll also provide another pair of eyes – so if you do happen to fail, they’ll have a chance at catching it before completely failing too late into the process.
Ask your examiner to repeat, if you need any of his instructions
The most important thing is to stay calm and this will control your nerves. The more you second guess yourself then that will result in possibly serious faults.
Do not assume you’ve failed
Driving test tips to help you pass the first time!
Don’t assume you’ve failed. If your driving instructor tells you they’re going to fail on an error, remember that there’s a buffer of 15 minor faults before it becomes dangerous and/or illegal—just focus on avoiding those for now.
What you perceive as a failure, may simply be a minor fault, just like for example stalling. You will not fail your test for this, it is what happens after the stall that matters.
Be guided by your instructor as to where to take your test
We understand you are keen to get your Full Licence, so many pupils want to jump into this un-prepared.
Get to know some of your test routes
Driving test routes can be challenging to navigate, so knowing some of them beforehand is a great start. Some tips for preparing include getting comfortable with your car and practicing on various types of roads. Remember also your Driving Instructor is teaching you how to drive, rather than how to drive on specific roads.
On the day before taking your driving test Make sure you’re well-rested – it may feel like an inconvenience but being tired or over-tired will make keeping alert much harder!
Get yourself into as routine as possible – use this time to familiarise yourself with any equipment in the vehicle such as seatbelts, lights, etc. Go over the show me tell me again with your driving instructor.
Ensure that you have all necessary parts of the paperwork (license/test booking confirmation). Create a checklist that could help.
Be on time for your driving lessons before the test
Arrive 10 minutes early for your driving lesson which puts you at risk of missing it entirely if late, and rushing when arriving in good time will leave you feeling flustered even if do make it
